| 02.06.06 - 200mph at last
Derek Flynn of Gold
RV Racing has been in touch to let us know how the
team finally broke the 200mph barrier;
After 4 consecutive
199 something's and then a 198 something it was really
neat to finally get our 200 and a six, and, even if we
do say so ourselves, not just get it, but by quite a margin,
205.18 and at an incredible 6.570. Again, this was not
without some pain and couple of thrashes by the Go Gold
Crew and I have to say a huge thank you to all of them
for their dedication to our cause, they are excellent and
this is very much their achievement as much as mine. I must
admit when I watched the video of our run the following day
and could hear their elation on the line at what we had just
achieved, it brought a bit of a lump to my throat. All I
do is mash the loud pedal and hang on and I now do that for
nearly 2 seconds less than I did at the start of last year!
I would like to thank our sponsors Gold
RV, Buff,
and Dataprint -
without your support we could not do what we do !!
In our race against Paula Atkin (our pit neighbours for
the event who had an unfortunate weekend with misfire problems,
better luck next time Paula) I had to lift at the 1/8th as
I was already in front and very much in danger of breaking
out. We analysed the data and we knew we were really on one
and would have broken out by quite a margin and we reckoned
we would have got the 200 then.
After getting the car ready
for the next run, we then had to wait for the following morning,
and we decided that, no matter what, I was not going to lift
against Barry Giles and, for a laugh, we were going to put
a 6.66 on it, we won't break out of that. You can imagine
my surprise as the Giles & Hartley
team arrived at the top end and said we both broke out and
amazingly I had broken out by the greater, I guess I really
don't get this bracket racing, as I was already jumping and
hollering even though we had lost! Then my team arrived and
gave me the news I was really waiting for 205, I think I
leapt as I as high as the front wheels went on that launch
it was just incredible, the tune up was right, the gearbox
rebuild had worked the new torque converter did it's job
and with a .968 sixty foot, and the car just kept pulling
all the way to the stripe I knew it was quick. We now want
to back it up and well we are not too sure what to aim for
next, I guess it is to try and be a little more consistent,
and try and win an event which will be hard as I can't see
us slowing it down.
Special thanks to the following people
who have all helped us achieve our goal of a 6 at 200 : The
Go Gold Crew, Richard & Lee
of J&W Automotive, Andy
Robinson Race Cars, Steve, Rob & Carmel of Turner Motorsport,
Jeff Bull, Steve Johnson, Mark Flavell & his team, Dave
Wilson, Bob Glassup and the Extreme Team, The Gibbs family,
Andy Carter, Kenny Coleman and any one else I forgot, oh
and thanks to all the other Super Proers who congratulated
us on our achievements and for all there help and support,
it is nice to think that some of us Super Proers are going
as quick or even quicker than some of the pro classes now.
